Births

Births in England or Wales must be registered in the registration district in which they take place although this may be arranged through any registration office within these countries.

From 1 April 2007, Devon (excluding Plymouth and Torbay) became 1 Registration District instead of its former 8 Districts.  This means that births that have taken place in the Devon County Council area may be registered at any of Devon's 8 Registration Offices or outstations.  Each Registration Office operates an appointment system for both the Registration Office itself and its outstations.

The main Act and regulations governing the registration of births and death are:

  • Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953 (as amended)
  • The Registration of Births and Deaths Regulations 1987 (as amended)
  • The Registration of Births and Deaths (Welsh Language) Regulations 1987 (as amended)
What's new?

Full birth or adoption certificates are required for any new passport application.
