Cheriton Fitzpaine pupils stride out

From Michaila Hill, Exeter 382535, September 05,2008

PLANS to walk to school have proven so popular at Cheriton Fitzpaine Primary School that it will launching its own walking bus on Monday 8 September.

Pupils and parents identified in the School Travel Plan that they can directly contribute to improving safety on the narrow road leading up to the school, by parking a short distance away and walking from there.

Children will meet at Bary Close at 8.30am and make their way to school. The walking bus will run every school day.

Head Teacher, Wendy Harris, said "As part of our School Travel Plan work, the school has run periodic walking events in the village over a number of years. Children enjoy walking and we are delighted that we have enough support from parent volunteers to make the formal launch of our Walking Bus possible. Participation on the "bus" will ensure tight supervision from adults whilst children learn how to keep safe as pedestrians in preparation for independent journeys when they are older. In addition, our school is in a confined, narrow road and it is hoped that vehicle congestion can be reduced near the school gate."

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Executive Member for Environment, said: "It's marvellous that the school has greeted the idea of the walking bus with such enthusiasm. I've noticed how much the children enjoy the opportunity to do something in the company of their friends. They will surely realise how they can help reduce congestion around the school, while at the same time improving their health and reducing CO2 emissions."

Local County Councillor Michael Lee, said: "I'm delighted this school has started a walking bus. Not only will it ease congestion in the village, especially around the school, but the children will be improving their health as well."

Notes to editorsThe Walking Bus will be launched at 8.30am on Monday 8 September starting at Bary Close. Press representatives are invited for a photo opportunity there or at the school at about 8.50am.
