Apply for a Copy Certificate

You can now apply for copy certificates online (birth, death, marriage or civil partnerships). They may also be obtained from the Devon Register Office, Castle Street, EXETER, EX4 3PQ either by telephone or post.

Details of costs

When ordering by telephone, the preferred method of payment is by credit or debit card. Postal applications should be made to the address above enclosing a cheque made payable to Devon County Council.

The following information must be supplied before a search of the records may be made:

  • full name of the person(s) included in the registration
  • date of the event including day, month and year
  • location of the event, for example, town or village
  • Any other relevant information that may help us to locate the certificate
  • A stamped addressed envelope would be appreciated

Please call 0845 155 1002 with the above details to request a copy certificate over the telephone.

Details of events which took place before July 1837 are not held by the Registration Service. The Devon Registration Service holds registers for births and deaths and for civil marriages since July 1837, excluding Plymouth and Torbay. Baptismal, Marriage and Burial registers prior to 1837 may be held by the local clergy or the Devon Records Office.

Alternatively people may wish to approach the General Register Office which is responsible for keeping records of all events in England and Wales from 1837 until present day. You can write to them at:-

NOTE: Reference numbers issued by the General Register Office are different from the local authority numbers and do not match up with local register entries. Full information as listed above must be provided for all certificate requests being submitted.
