Identifying the Wildlife Requirements

Hedges

Does the scheme affect any hedges?

Don't know

You need to find out if there are any existing hedges on or around the site, and if the scheme will affect them.

If the scheme will affect any hedges, you need to ensure that the relevant statutory requirements are met. Please read the information on the 'Yes Section'.

Yes

You will need to ensure that the scheme complies with the requirements of the Hedgerows Regulations 1997. These require land managers to obtain the permission of the local planning authority before they remove most countryside hedges. These requirements apply to permitted development (ie highway schemes), but not to other works requiring planning permission.

If a scheme affects any hedges, it may have an impact on nesting birds. Nesting birds image - PDF icon (78KB - pdf help) are protected by law and it is therefore necessary to ensure that the statutory requirements are met.
